LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Eight teams that competed in post-season play will be featured on the 2007-08 Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball schedule, announced Tuesday by the Wyoming Athletics Department. BYU, Idaho State, New Mexico and TCU all competed in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, while Kansas State, Montana, Utah and Wisconsin were participants in the WNIT.
The Cowgirls will open the regular season against the Idaho State Bengals on Nov. 9, and then will have a rematch with their opponent from the semi-finals in the WNIT a year ago in Kansas State, on Nov. 15. That game can be seen on The Mtn. Television Network. On their first road trip of the non-conference schedule, they will face Saint Louis University (Nov. 18) and then a game against the Wisconsin Badgers (Nov. 20), a rematch of the WNIT Championship game, in Madison, Wis.
Montana, Nov. 29, and Denver, Dec. 1, will also visit Laramie before they head back out on the road for a tough match up against Colorado (Dec. 5) and the KCRG-TV9 Hawkeye Challenge, Dec. 8-9, in Iowa City. They will close out play before the Christmas break at the Wyoming Shootout, Dec. 15, in Casper, the Northern Colorado Bears, on Dec. 17, and Westminster College, on Dec. 19, back in Laramie.
They will finish out the non-conference schedule with one final game before the MWC begins on Thursday, January 3 against the San Francisco Dons in San Francisco, Calif.
"The 2007-08 basketball schedule will be a tremendous challenge for this team," said UW head coach Joe Legerski. "With preseason contests against Colorado and Kansas State from the Big 12 and road games with Big 10 opponents Iowa and Wisconsin, along with perennial powerhouses from the Big Sky in Idaho State and Montana, our veteran team will be tested early.
"The Mountain West Conference continues to be one of the top leagues in the country. The conference season opens up with the difficult task of playing New Mexico on the road followed up with TCU. We are excited about the opportunities ahead of us and as always staying healthy and having the ball bounce your way will determine the success of this team."
MWC women's games will be played primarily on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with some Tuesday and Sunday games added in to the schedule. Wyoming will begin MWC play on the road, Wednesday, Jan. 9 against the New Mexico Lobos in a televised game on CSTV. Their first home conference game will be played Jan. 12 against TCU. That game will also be featured on The Mtn. Sports Network. Other MWC televised games for the Cowgirls will be Sunday, Feb. 10 against the New Mexico Lobos, on CSTV, Utah on Sunday, March 2, and the BYU Cougars, on Wednesday, March 5, which are both on The Mtn. The New Mexico and BYU games will be in Laramie, while the Utah game is set to be played in Salt Lake City.
Head coach Joe Legerski enters his fifth season with the Cowgirl Basketball Program. He returns all five starters and ten letterwinners from last season's WNIT Championship squad, including two-time First Team All-MWC selection Hanna Zavecz, along with Second Team All-MWC and MWC Newcomer of the Year Justyna Podziemska.
