LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Tenth year head coach Joe Legerski and the University of Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team have completed their preseason workouts and will begin regular season practices for the 2012-13 season on Monday, October 1, in the Arena Auditorium.
"It's great to be back in the gym and working with a group that brings back all five starters," said Legerski. "We are still young but the experience we gained last season will be valuable. There will be challenges ahead, but we are looking forward to taking those on and for the upcoming year."
The Cowgirls' first practice is slated for Monday from 2:30-4:00 p.m. They will continue on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday for the remainder of the week running from 1:30-4:00 p.m. During the season, the Cowgirls will be available to the media on selected days of the week following practice depending on the schedule. For regular practice days and times during the year, please contact Amy Dambro.
Wyoming will hold their annual media day Thursday, October 4 in the Arena Auditorium beginning at 1:00 p.m. Cowgirl players and coaches will be available at that time.
Legerski returns all five starters and ten letterwinners from last season's squad that went 12-17 overall and 7-7 in the Mountain West. He welcomes back three All-Conference selections from a year ago in seniors Chuandra Sewell and Ashley Sickles, plus sophomore Kayla Woodward.
A Second Team All-Conference selection, Sewell led the team in points, rebounding and assists a year ago, while Woodward followed with 12.1 points and 1.3 steals to earn Third Team All-Conference honors in her first season. Sickles was named Honorable Mention All-Mountain West chipping in 11.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and almost one blocked shot per game.
Wyoming will play two exhibition games to begin the 2012-13 season. The first game will be on Monday, Oct. 29 against Dakota Wesleyan, and the following week against Regis University, on Monday, Nov. 5. The Cowgirls will open the regular season with two straight at home before a three-game road stretch. They will tip things off against the Idaho Vandals on Friday, Nov. 9 followed by a match-up against the Denver Pioneers, on Friday, Nov. 16. A Thanksgiving trip to California for the Pepperdine Tournament, Nov. 23-24, is scheduled with two games over the weekend, before facing the Colorado Buffs, on Wednesday, Nov. 28, in Boulder.
Mountain West women's games are slated for Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Cowgirls will begin MW play on the road beginning Wednesday, January 9 against the Boise State Broncos, followed by their first home game on Saturday, January 12 against league newcomer Nevada Wolf Pack.
