The most decorated student-athlete in Cowgirl Basketball history and two dedicated marketing interns received the 56th annual Admiral Emory S. Land Awards presented Saturday at Wyoming's homecoming game with Utah. Hanna Zavecz, a four-year basketball letterwinner, received the Admiral Land Award, while Shelley Heward and Eric Whiting are co-winners of the Admiral Land Trophy.

The Admiral Land Award and Trophy are traditionally presented at homecoming in recognition of the top student-athlete or athletes along with a person or group who has exhibited excellence in promoting UW athletics.

Zavecz, a 6-0 forward from Melbourne, Australia, was named AP Honorable Mention All America in 2008 and was twice named WBCA Honorable Mention All America during her outstanding career. Her impact on the Cowgirl basketball program is immeasurable. In her senior year, she led the Cowgirls in scoring (13.9 points per game), rebounds (6.1 rpg), assists (3.6 aspg), steals (1.6 spg), and blocked shots (1.6 bpg) while leading the Cowgirls to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. She was a three-time First Team All-MWC selection, while earning Second Team All-Conference during her freshman year, and Defensive Player of the Year honors twice. Zavecz was named the MVP of the WNIT Tournament in 2007 after leading the Cowgirls' memorable run to the WNIT National Championship. For her career, Zavecz ranks among the Top 10 in 12 career categories in school history. She ranks second in free throws made, attempts, assists blocked shots and steals, fifth in three-point field goal attempts, field goal attempts, sixth in three point field goals made, seventh in field goals made and ninth in rebounds. A family and consumer science major, Hanna is also one of 16 players in school history to reach the 1000 point mark and ranks fourth all-time in scoring with 1736 points. She is the daughter of Peter and Marianne Zavecz of Melbourne, and is currently playing professional basketball with the Bendigo Spirit of the WNBL in Australia.

Shelley Heward has been an outstanding intern in the Athletics Marketing and Promotions Office for over two years. During that time, her responsibilities included handling promotions for volleyball, wrestling, and men's basketball. She has also been the contact person for the Delta Dental Kickoff Kid program. She has demonstrated a superior work ethic and dedication to detail, and whether she is helping to set up Tailgate Park in the early morning hours of a football game day or planning promotions for a home volleyball match, Shelley has a positive attitude and is a valuable asset to the Marketing and Promotions team. A business administration major, Shelley is the daughter of Russell and Brenda Heward of Evanston, Wyo.

During his internship with Marketing and Promotions, Eric Whiting has displayed an incredible talent for graphic design. He re-designed the UW Fan Clubs website, creating individual pages for each sport. He has also used his skills to create several newspaper advertisements. An excellent student and a hard worker, Whiting splits his football game days between his marketing duties and filming for the UW football team, which makes for very long days. A marketing major, Eric is the son of Bryan and Cathy Whiting of Glenwood Springs, Colo.

The Admiral Land awards have been a special part of Homecoming since 1953. They are given as a tribute to distinguished UW alumnus Admiral Emory S. Land, class of 1898. Land was a World War II Shipping Administrator and head of the U.S. Maritime Service. At UW, he was a member of the first football team and four of the first five teams in school history.
