Fourth year head coach Joe Legerski and the University of Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will open up with first practice of the 2006-07 season Saturday, October 14 at 8:30 a.m., in the Arena Auditorium.
Legerski welcomes back three starters and ten letterwinners from last year's squad that went 21-9 overall, 10-6 in the Mountain West Conference and a fifth place finish in the league. The Cowgirls also made it to the second round of the WNIT a year ago, while three Cowgirls garnered All-Conference awards, including juniors Hanna Zavecz and Jodi Bolerjack and sophomore Megan McGuffey.
The Cowgirls' first practice will begin on Saturday afternoon from 8:30-11:00 a.m. and another on Sunday going from 9:00-11:00 a.m. They will continue on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of the following week with a practice from 1:30-4:00 p.m.
"Both the players as well as the coaching staff are excited about the official start of the season," said Legerski. "We had a great preseason with conditioning as well as individual workouts. Now it's time to carry that over in to a team practice situation."
The Cowgirls' will open up the 2006-07 regular season with one of two exhibition games against Adams State, on Friday, Nov. 3, at 7:00 p.m., in the Double A. They will also open the regular season at home on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m., as they face the University of San Francisco Dons. New Mexico and UNLV will be the first Mountain West Conference opposition for the Cowgirls, on Thursday, Jan. 4, in Laramie and Thursday, Jan. 11, in Las Vegas.
