Woodward Named MW Preseason Player of the Year for Second-Straight Year

Oct. 14, 2014

For the second-consecutive year, Wyoming's Kayla Woodward has been named the 2014-15 Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year. The Cowgirl basketball team was picked to finish third as the MW announced its 2014-15 preseason women's basketball poll and all-conference team on Tuesday. The voting panel consisted of the league's 11 head coaches and select women's basketball media. Cowboy Larry Nance Jr. was tabbed the Preseason Player of the Year on the men's side, marking the first time in MW history Wyoming has earned both accolades.

"CSU and Boise State are the clear cut favorites with their returning players," head coach Joe Legerski said. "Parity would describe the remaining teams in our league and we are all chasing the top two. For Wyoming to challenge for a championship this season, someone will have to emerge to replace Fallon Lewis and her 14 points and 10 rebounds."

A 5-11 forward from Sheridan, Wyo., Woodward was first-team All-Mountain West selection last season and was named to the 2014 MW All-Tournament Team. The second-leading scorer in the league from a year ago, she averaged 16.7 points per game. She is joined on the preseason team by Boise State senior Deanna Weaver, Colorado State sophomore Ellen Nystrom, Fresno State senior Alex Sheedy and San José State senior Ta`Rea Cunnigan. San Diego State freshman McKynzie Fort was named Preseason Freshman of the Year, while Boise State Camille Redmon earned Preseason Newcomer of the Year honors.

Colorado State, the 2013 MW regular-season champion, was tabbed as the preseason favorite. The Rams received 21 first place votes and 276 points. Boise State was picked second with four first-place votes and 241 points, ahead of Wyoming with three first-place votes and 235 points. Fresno State placed fourth with 181 points, while Nevada earned 155 points for fifth place. UNLV (143 points) edged out San Diego State (134 points) for sixth place. Utah State was picked eighth (123 points), followed by New Mexico (122 points) in ninth, San José State in tenth (81) and Air Force in 11th (27 points)

The Cowgirls will host the Western State Mountaineers, on Monday, Nov. 17, to open up the newly-renovated Arena-Auditorium. Game time is set for 7 p.m. MT.
