Barbara Burke, the University of Wyoming's Senior Associate Athletics Director, has been appointed to the prestigious NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee, Christine Dawson, Chair of the Division I Championship Competition Cabinet, has announced.

Burke, who is in her eighth year at Wyoming, will be one of 10 members of the committee, which is charged with the oversight of all aspects of the Division I women's basketball championships. Among the committee's duties are the evaluation of teams thoughout the season, and the selection of teams and creation of the NCAA Tournament bracket. The committee also assigns crews of officials to work tournament games as well as to staff selected sites and assign committee representatives to staff preliminary-round games. The committee also is responsible for the site selections for future tournaments.

"It's a great honor for me to be named to this committee," Burke said. "There is a tremendous responsibility that comes with the appointment. I'm humbled by this opportunity to represent the University of Wyoming and the Mountain West Conference. I am excited about assisting in the ongoing process of intercollegiate athletics, and look forward to serving the NCAA member institutions. This is very rewarding work."

"I'm excited for her," UW Athletics Director Gary Barta said. "She is extremely well-qualified, and will do a terrific job. The Mountain West and the university could not have a better representative. It's a great honor for her, and for the university."

The committee meets five times a year including once during the fall (October), a weekend for selection of the teams for the tournament (March), and during the Final Four (March-April). There also is a meeting in February and one at the end of June or early July.

Burke was promoted in August of 2001 from Associate Athletics Director/Senior Women's Administrator to her current position. In addition to her duties of overseeing women's sports programs at UW, she is in charge of the day-to-day internal operations of the department. She assisted in the development and implementation of the department's strategic plan.

Burke came to Wyoming from UTEP. She began there as Associate Athletics Director and Senior Women's Administrator, but was named the school's Interim Athletics Director in February, 1998.

A 1980 graduate of Western Michigan, Burke lettered in both basketball and softball, and was team captain of both. She was inducted into the Western Michigan Hall of Fame in 1998. She earned her master's degree in Education/Administration of Athletics from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1984.
