LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Third year head coach Joe Legerski and Wyoming basketball team will open up the 2005-06 season this week with the first of two exhibition games. They will host the Adams State Grizzlies, on Thursday night, Nov. 3, with the game set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
The Cowgirls return three starters and nine letterwinners to a team that finished 16-12 overall, along with a 7-7 record and a fourth place finish in the MWC a year ago. It was the best finish for a Cowgirl team since the 2002-03 season and the highest they'd finished in conference play since 1996-97. Wyoming also returns two All-Conference selections from a year ago in Erin Hicks and Hanna Zavecz. During her junior year, Hicks averaged 10.6 points and a team leading 7.5 rebounds, which helped her earn Honorable Mention All-MWC honors. Zavecz contributed 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds in her first year with the Cowgirl team as she was a Second Team All-Conference selection in 2004-05.
Adams State enters the season by welcoming back three starters and five letterwinners to a team that went 10-17 overall and 8-11 in the RMAC a year ago. The Cowgirls and the Grizzlies have met eight previous times during the regular season. Wyoming holds the series record 8-0. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 18, 1994 when the Cowgirls defeated Adams State 88-47 in Laramie. They are coached by Jeff Storm who is in his sixth year with the program.
Wyoming opens up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 19 against Sacramento State in Laramie.
