Laramie, Wyo. - Fourth year head coach Joe Legerski and Wyoming basketball team will open up the 2006-07 season this week with the first of their two exhibition games. They will host the Adams State Grizzlies, on Friday night, Nov. 3, with the game set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. Prices for the game are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children (ages 18 and under). Students with their i.d. can get in the game for free. It's also Family Friday Night where a family of four receives 4 hotdogs, 4 Pepsi products and 4 game tickets all for just $26. Other family opportunities are available. The Cowgirls return three starters and ten letterwinners to a team that finished 21-9 overall, along with a 10-6 record and a fifth place finish in the MWC a year ago. It was the best finish for a Cowgirl team since the 2002-03 season and the highest they'd finished in conference play since 1996-97. Wyoming also returns two All-Conference selections from a year ago in Jodi Bolerjack and Hanna Zavecz, while Megan McGuffey earned Newcomer of the Year honors. During her sophomore year, Bolerjack averaged 13.3 points and 1.7 assists per game, which helped her earn Third Team All-MWC honors. Zavecz contributed a team leading 14.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists in her second year with the Cowgirl team as she was a First Team All-Conference selection and named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2005-06. In her first season, McGuffey added 8.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest.
Adams State enters the season by welcoming back four starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 4-23 overall and 3-16 in the RMAC a year ago.The Cowgirls and the Grizzlies have met eight previous times during the regular season. Wyoming holds the series record 8-0. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 18, 1994 when the Cowgirls defeated Adams State 88-47 in Laramie. They are coached by Kelly Kruger who is in his first year with the program.
Wyoming opens up the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 12 against University of San Francisco in Laramie.
