Seventh year head coach Joe Legerski and Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will open up the 2009-10 season this week with the first of their two exhibition games. They will host the Adams State Grizzlies, on Monday night, Nov. 2, with the game set to begin at 7 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
Prices for the game are $10.00 for adults and $6.00 for children (ages three through 18). Students with their i.d. can get in the game for free. For more information, please call the UW Ticket Office at 800-922-9461 or 307-766-4850.
The Cowgirls return three starters and nine letterwinners to a team that finished 2008-09 with a 16-14 overall and 8-8 in the Mountain West Conference. Of those returning players, they are led by juniors Hillary Carlson and Aubrey Vandiver, plus sophomore Emma Langford. Carlson was a Second Team All-MWC selection while averaging 11.8 points and 5.2 rebounds. Langford, who averaged 10.5 points and 4.5 boards, won the Sixth Player of the Year Award given out by the MWC. Vandiver returns after sitting out last season. She averaged 10.6 points and 5.7 rebounds and was a Third Team All-MWC selection as a sophomore. Other key contributors back for the Cowgirls are juniors Jade Kennedy and Randi Richardson and sophomores Leah Fitzgerald, Brenna Freeze, Kristen Scheffler and Ashley Sickles. They also welcome three newcomers with Bec Campigli, Chaundra Sewell and Sara Wilson.
Adams State returns four starters and six letterwinners to a team that went 14-14 overall and 10-9 for a third place finish in the RMAC a year ago. The two teams have met nine times during the regular season. Wyoming leads the series 9-0. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 30, 2009 as the Cowgirls downed the Grizzlies 58-48 in Laramie. Adams State is coached by Kelly Kruger who is in his fourth season with the program.
Wyoming will play one final exhibition game against the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves, Friday, Nov. 6, beginning at 7 p.m. before opening up regular season play on Nov. 13 against the Denver Pioneers on the road.
