The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will play their final exhibition game of the season on Friday night as they host the Colorado Christian Cougars. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
They will then open up the 2006-07 regular season by welcoming the University of San Francisco Dons, on Sunday, Nov. 12, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
Wyoming opened up the exhibition season with a 77-46 victory over the Adams State Grizzlies. They were led by newcomer Justyna Podziemska who finished with a team high 15 points, six rebounds and six steals. Sophomore Alysia Kraft followed with 11 points and two rebounds off the bench.
The Cowgirls return three starters and ten letterwinners to a team that finished 21-9 overall, along with a 10-6 MWC record and a fifth place league finish a year ago. It was the second most wins in school history and the ten conference victories tied for the most since the 1978-79 season. Wyoming also returns two All-Conference selections from a year ago in Jodi Bolerjack and Hanna Zavecz, while Megan McGuffey earned Newcomer of the Year honors. During her sophomore year, Bolerjack averaged 13.3 points and 1.7 assists per game, which helped earn her Third Team All-MWC honors. Zavecz contributed a team leading 14.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists in her second year with the Cowgirl team as she was a First Team All-Conference selection and named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2005-06. In her first season, McGuffey added 8.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest.
The Colorado Christian Cougars have gone 1-0 in exhibition play with a 74-64 win over York College on Tuesday night. They return three starters and three letterwinners to a team that went 4-25 overall and 1-18 in the RMAC a year ago. The Cowgirls and the Cougars have never met in a prior regular season meeting. Colorado Christian is coached by Kristen Buckley who is in her fourth season with the program.
The Cowgirls will open up the 2006-07 regular season at home against San Francisco Dons. This will be the second game for USF as they open up their regular season against Colorado on Friday, Nov. 10. The Dons went 2-0 in their exhibition season. They return four starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 9-20 overall and 4-10 in the West Coast Conference a year ago. The Cowgirls and the Dons have met three previous times. USF holds the series record 2-1. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 3, 1995 when the Dons defeated Cowgirls 68-44 in Tucson. They are coached by Tanya Haave who is in her first year with the program.
Prices for the game are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children (ages 18 and under). Students with their UW ID can get in the game for free. It's also Family Friday Night for the Colorado Christian game where a family of four receives 4 hot dogs, 4 Pepsi products and 4 game tickets all for just $26. On Sunday, it's Daddy-Daughter day. For $10.00 dads and daughters receive 2 game tickets and a free digital photo with Pistol Pete. Tickets must be purchased prior to game day. Other family opportunities are available.
