LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will play their final exhibition game this week as they host the Metro State Roadrunners, on Friday night, Nov. 11. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
The Cowgirls are 1-0 in during the exhibition season as they defeated the Adams State Grizzlies, 62-36, last Friday night. Sophomore Jodi Bolerjack led the way with a team high 14 points followed by Megan McGuffey with ten. Hanna Zavecz recorded a team high seven rebounds, while the Cowgirls shot 25-69 (.362) from the field and out rebounded the Grizzlies, 49-26.
Wyoming returns three starters and nine letterwinners to a team that finished 16-12 overall, along with a 7-7 record and a fourth place finish in the MWC a year ago. It was the best finish for a Cowgirl team since the 2002-03 season and the highest they'd finished in conference play since 1996-97. Wyoming also returns two All-Conference selections from a year ago in Erin Hicks and Hanna Zavecz. During her junior year, Hicks averaged 10.6 points and a team leading 7.5 rebounds, which helped her earn Honorable Mention All-MWC honors. Zavecz contributed 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds in her first year with the Cowgirl team as she was a Second Team All-Conference selection in 2004-05.
Metro State enters the game with a 0-2 record during the exhibition season as they were defeated by the Denver Pioneers and the New Mexico Lobos. They return three starters and five letterwinners to a team that went 24-7 overall and 15-4 in the RMAC a year ago.
The Cowgirls and the Roadrunners have met ten previous times during the regular season. Wyoming holds the series record 10-0. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 18, 1996 when the Cowgirls defeated Metro State 66-54 in Laramie. They are coached by David Murphy who is in his fourth season with the program and his eighth as a head coach.
Wyoming opens up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 19 against Sacramento State in Laramie.
