The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team will open up the 2008-09 regular season with two games on the road. They will take on the Denver Pioneers, on Friday, Nov. 14, in Denver and the Montana Lady Griz, on Sunday, Nov. 16, in Missoula.
The DU game is set to tip off at 7 p.m. while the Montana game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Wyoming went 2-0 during the exhibition season with a convincing 93-48 victory over the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions, and a 79-49 victory over Metro State. They were led by freshman Emma Langford, who scored 25 and 21 points respectively in each game.
The Cowgirls return one starter and eight letterwinners to a team that finished with a 24-7 overall record, 12-4 in the Mountain West Conference and the program's first NCAA Tournament bid. Of those returners, they are led by senior Megan McGuffey and junior Aubrey Vandiver. McGuffey played in 29 games last season and averaged 3.9 points and 2.3 rebounds. Vandiver was a Third Team All-MWC selection, while averaging 10.6 points and 5.7 rebounds a year ago. Other key contributors back for the Cowgirls are seniors Elisabeth Dissen and Rebecca Vanderjagt, along with juniors Mallory Cline and Gemma Koehler, and sophomores Hillary Carlson and Jade Kennedy. They also welcome six newcomers with Leah Fitzgerald, Brenna Freeze, Emma Langford, Randi Richardson, Kristen Scheffler and Ashley Sickles.
This is the opener for the Pioneers as well, who went 1-0 in exhibition play with a victory over Adams State 65-36. They return two starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 11-19 overall and 6-12 in the SunBelt Conference a year ago. This is the 16th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 12-3. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 1, 2007 as the Cowgirls downed the Pioneers, 61-45, in Laramie. Denver is coached by Erik Johnson who is in his first season with the program.

UW's game against Montana is also the season opener for the Lady Griz who went 1-0 in exhibition play. They return four starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 25-7 overall and 13-3 in the Big Sky Conference a year ago. This is the 33rd meeting between the two teams. Montana leads the series 25-7. The last time the two teams met was November 29, 2007 as the Cowgirls defeated the Lady Griz 65-54 in Laramie. Montana is coached by Robin Selvig who is in his 31st season with the program.
