Cowgirls Host Fighting Sioux and Bulldogs This Week

The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team will play their regular season home opener this week when they host the North Dakota Fighting Sioux, on Thursday, Nov. 20, with the game set to tip off at 7 p.m. They will also host the Gonzaga Bulldogs, on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m.

Prior to the North Dakota game, the Cowgirls 2008 NCAA Tournament banner will be unveiled before introductions.

The Cowgirls are currently 1-1 overall after earning a split against Denver and Montana last weekend. They are led by freshman Kristen Scheffler who is averaging 16.5 points per game, which is seventh in the conference. Fellow freshman Emma Langford is close behind with 15.5 points and five rebounds, while senior Megan McGuffey is averaging a team leading 5.5 rebounds and chipping in 12 points per contest. Wyoming is shooting 45-102 (.441) from the field, 18-20 (.720) from the charity stripe and averaging 62.5 points.

UND comes in to the week with a 1-1 record overall. The Fighting Sioux are led by Kierah Kimbrough who is averaging 19.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. Mallory Youngblut follows with 13.5 points and four rebounds per game. They return three starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 27-4 overall and 10-2 in the Great West Conference a year ago. This is the first meeting ever between the two schools. North Dakota is coached by Gene Roebuck who is in his 22nd season with the program.

Wyoming will continue play at home against the Gonzaga Bulldogs, on Sunday, Nov. 23. The Bulldogs come in to the game with a 2-0 record overall with wins over Eastern Oregon and Washington. They will play twice before facing the Cowgirls. Courtney Vandersloot leads the way averaging 23.5 points and 4.5 rebounds, while Tiffanie Shives is adding 12 points and four rebounds. They return four starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 25-9 overall and 13-1 in the West Coast Conference a year ago. This is the second meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 1-0. The last time the two teams met was November 24, 1989 as the Cowgirls defeated the Bulldogs 69-60 in Spokane. Gonzaga is coached by Kelly Graves who is in his ninth season with the program.
