The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team will be out on the road over the weekend as they begin play at the LMU-Doubletree L.A. Westside Thanksgiving Basketball Classic in Los Angeles, Calif. They are scheduled to open up with the Northern Iowa Panthers, on Friday, Nov. 25. The game is set for 4:00 p.m. Mountain Time. They will either play the host school Loyola Marymount Lions or the Youngstown State Penguins, on Saturday, Nov. 25. The games are set for 4:00 p.m. MT if they win or 2:00 p.m. MT if they lose. The Cowgirls are currently 1-2 on the young season with a 69-61 win against Chadron State last Thursday. Wyoming is led by junior Chaundra Sewell with 15 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Ashley Sickles follows with 11.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. As a team, they are shooting 56-156 (.359) from the field and 15-61 (.246) from beyond the arc.
The Panthers are currently 2-1 overall on the season. UNI is led by Katelin Oney who is averaging 15.7 points and three rebounds per game. She is followed by Rachel Madrigal who is adding 15 points and 5.7 rebounds. They return three starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 27-6 overall, 17-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference and made an appearance in the First Round of the NCAA.
This is the fourth meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 3-1. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 28, 2004 as the Cowgirls defeated UNI 65-45. Northern Iowa is coached by Tanya Warren who is in her fourth season.
The Lions are currently 0-3 this season and will play Youngstown State on Friday night. LMU is led by Alex Cowling who is averaging 22.3 points and nine rebounds. She is followed by Emily Ben-Jumbo who is adding 8.7 points and six rebounds. They return three starters and six letterwinners to a team that went 11-18 overall and 5-9 in the West Coast Conference.
This would be the sixth meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 3-2. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 4, 1998 as the Cowgirls defeated the Lions, 65-53. LMU is coached by Julie Wilhoit who is in her 18th season.
The Penguins are currently 2-2 overall and will play Loyola Marymount on Friday. YSU is led by Brandi Brown who is averaging 15.0 points and eight rebounds. She is followed by Heidi Schlegel who is adding 10.3 points and 3.7 rebounds. They return four starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 6-24 overall and 4-14 in the Horizon League. This would be the first ever meeting between the two schools. The Penguins are coached by Bob Boldon.
