Cowgirl Basketball Travels to St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic

The Wyoming women's basketball team heads out on the road for the first time this season to participate in the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic, on Friday and Saturday, in Moraga, Calif. The Cowgirls will face the Iowa State Cyclones followed by the Howard Bison. Both games are set for 1 p.m. MT. The Cowgirls enter Friday's match-up with a 2-1 mark after suffering a 77-66 loss on Tuesday night against Idaho. Four of five starters finished the night in double-figures led by junior guard Marquelle Dent. She finished with a season-high 19 points and eight assists, while shooting 6 of12 from the field and 5 of 5 from the free throw line. Senior forward Kayla Woodward recorded her second straight double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman forward Bailee Cotton recorded a career-high 15 points followed by senior guard Kaitlyn Mileto with 12 points. Wyoming shot 20 of 66 (.303) from the field and 17 of 20 (.850) from the free throw line. Idaho outrebounded the Cowgirls 47-40.

Woodward is averaging a team-high 16.0 points and 9.3 rebounds, while Dent is adding 15.3 points and a team-leading 7.3 assists. Cotton follows with 11.7 points and seven boards. As a team, the Cowgirls are shooting 88-203 (.433) from the field and 51-66 (.773) from the charity stripe. Wyoming leads the league in scoring defense giving up just 49.0 points in three games, assists and field goal percentage.

Iowa State is 3-0 entering the contest with victories over USC Upstate, Drake and Cincinnati. The Cyclones have five players in double-digit scoring including Brynn Williamson. She is averaging 14.7 points and 8.0 rebounds. Seanna Johnson follows with 14.0 points and a team-high 10.3 rebounds. As a team, Iowa State is averaging 89.0 points per contest and 44.3 rebounds. They return four starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 20-11 overall and 9-9 in the Big 12 conference a year ago. This is the second meeting between the two schools. ISU won the only meeting 74-65 on Nov. 27, 1987. The Cyclones are coached by Bill Fennelly who is in his 20th season with the program.

The Bison are 0-4 overall and will play St. Mary's before taking on the Cowgirls. Te'Shya Heslip leads Howard averaging 14.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest. As a team, the Bison are averaging 61.0 points per contest compared to the 78.8 points scored by their opponents. Howard returns four starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 11-20 overall and 6-10 in league play. This is the first meeting between the two schools. The Bison are coached by Tenille Adams who is in her second year.
