The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will host one game this weekend and then immediately head out on the road for another. They welcome the Montana Lady Griz on Friday, Dec. 2, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium, then will travel to Denver, Colo. to take on the Denver Pioneers, on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m.
The Cowgirls are 2-1 in the early season after victories over Sacramento State, 47-35, and Colorado, 66-50. Wyoming is led in scoring by sophomore Hanna Zavecz who is averaging 11 points along with 4.7 assists and four steals per game. Erin Hicks is the leading rebounder with 7.7 per contest while chipping in 6.3 points per game. Wyoming is 61-156 (.391) from the field and averaging 33.3 rebounds per game.
The Lady Griz are currently 3-1 overall and are led by Katie Edwards who is averaging 18 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. They come in to this season with two returning starters and five letterwinners from a team that went 22-8 overall and 13-1 in the Big Sky conference last year.
This will be the seventh meeting between the two schools. Montana leads the series 5-1. The last time the two teams met was Jan. 6, 2005 in Missoula as the Lady Griz defeated the Cowgirls 58-45. Montana is coached by Robin Selvig who is in his 28th season with the program.
The Pioneers are currently 1-2 overall and will play Portland on Friday night before facing the Cowgirls. They are led by Jenna Cole who is averaging 8.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. They come in to this season with four returning starters and five letterwinners from a team that went 6-22 overall and 4-11 in the Sun Belt Conference a year ago.
This will be the 15th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 11-3. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 26, 2004 in Laramie as the Cowgirls defeated the Pioneers 55-54. Denver is coached by Pam Tanner who is in her 11th season with the program. She has an overall record of 142-138.
