LARAMIE, Wyo. -
In their only game of the week, the Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team will host the Texas Woman's University Pioneers, on Saturday, December 15, at 1:00 p.m. in Casper. The Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wyoming Shoot-Out will be played in the Casper Events Center as part of a double-header with the men.
"We're excited to play in Casper, and then be home for two games," said UW head coach Joe Legerski. "Texas Woman's University is a junior and senior oriented team. This is a game we have to establish ourselves regardless of who we are playing."
Wyoming is currently 8-1 overall after wins over Saint Joseph's, 66-64, and Iowa, 54-50, at the KCRG-TV9 Hawkeye Challenge this past weekend. They are also ranked 24th in the Associated Press Poll and 25th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll. Senior Hanna Zavecz leads the way with 15.1 points and 4.6 assists, which ranks third in the league. She is followed by sophomore Aubrey Vandiver with 13.9 points and a team leading 6.7 rebounds, while Justyna Podziemska is chipping in 13.3 points per game. The Cowgirls are shooting .411 (189-460) from the field and .713 (127-178) from the free throw line.
The Pioneers are currently 3-4 overall coming in to the weekend. They are led by Renee Renz who is averaging 16.9 points and 6.4 rebounds. She is followed by Savannah Thompson who is adding 16.6 points and 6.1 rebounds. They return three starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 11-16 overall and 5-9 in the Lone Star Conference a year ago. This is the first meeting ever between the two teams. TWU is coached by Beth Jillson who is in her first season with the program.
