The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team will play their final two home games before the holiday break beginning tonight with the Northern Colorado Bears coming to Laramie. They will also host the Westminster College Griffins, on Wednesday, December 19. Both games are set to tip at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
Wyoming is currently 9-1 overall after a 75-60 victory over the Texas Woman's University Pioneers this past weekend in Casper. They are also ranked 24th in the Associated Press Poll and 25th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll. Senior Hanna Zavecz leads the way with 15.2 points and 4.6 assists, which ranks third in the league. She is followed by sophomore Aubrey Vandiver with 13.7 points and a team leading seven rebounds, while Justyna Podziemska is chipping in 12.2 points per game. The Cowgirls are shooting .408 (216-529) from the field and .722 (140-194) from the free throw line.
The Bears are currently 5-4 overall coming in to the game. They are led by Courtney Stoermer who is averaging 10.7 points and five rebounds per game. She is followed by Danielle Hagen who is adding 8.7 points and 10.7 rebounds. They return one starter and three letterwinners to a team that went 5-24 overall and 2-14 in the Big Sky Conference a year ago. This is the 26th meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 17-8. The last time the two teams met was November 15, 2006 as the Cowgirls defeated the Bears, 76-46. Northern Colorado is coached by Jaime White who is in her second year with the program.
The Griffins are currently 12-2 overall. They are led by Shannon Evans who is averaging 15 points and 5.2 assists per game. She is followed by Elisa Leader who is adding 12.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest. They return four starters and 12 letterwinners to a team that went 22-12 overall and 8-6 in the Frontier Conference a year ago. This is the first ever meeting between the two schools. Westminster is coached by JD Gustin.
