The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will resume non-conference play as they take on the Idaho Vandals, on Thursday, Dec. 28, in the opening round of the Lady Griz Holiday Classic. The game is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. at Dahlberg Arena in Missoula, Mont.
Wyoming is currently 8-2 overall. They are led by junior Hanna Zavecz who is averaging a team leading 14.9 points along with 3.7 rebounds. Justyna Podziemska follows with 13.8 points and a team leading 7.2 rebounds, while Jodi Bolerjack is adding 13.2 points. The Cowgirls are shooting 241-546 (.441) from the field and 90-227 (.396) from beyond the arc. They currently rank first in the Mountain West Conference in field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage.
The Vandals are currently 3-6 overall. They are led by Katie Madison who is averaging a team leading 20.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. She is followed by Sara Dennehy who is adding nine points and 4.9 rebounds. Idaho returns two starters and five letterwinners to a team that went 10-19 overall last year and 5-11 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Cowgirls and the Vandals have met three times previously. Idaho holds the series record 2-1. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 25, 1989 when the Vandals defeated the Cowgirls 55-47. They are coached by Mike Divilbiss who is in his sixth season with the program and his 20th as a head coach.
In their second game of the weekend, the Cowgirls could possibly face the Canisius Golden Griffins. Canisius comes in to the weekend 7-4 overall and will play Montana in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday. They are led by Amanda Cavo who is averaging 12.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. She is followed by Abby Radunske with 11.2 points and 4.5 rebounds. The Golden Griffins return three starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 18-11 overall and 14-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference a year ago. This would be the first meeting between the two teams. They are coached by Terry Zeh who is in his third year with the program and as a head coach.
UW could also face the Montana Lady Griz in the second round of the tournament on Friday at either 5:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. They are currently 10-1 overall and are led by Mandy Morales who is averaging 22.3 points and 4.5 rebounds. Brittany Lohman and Tamara Guardipee lead the team in rebounds with 5.7 per game. They return three starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 21-7 overall and 10-4 in the Big Sky Conference a year ago. The Cowgirls and the Lady Griz have met nine previous times including earlier this season. Montana leads the series 6-2. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 30, 2006 when the Lady Griz defeated Cowgirls 70-59 in Missoula. They are coached by Robin Selvig who is in his 29th season with the program.
