The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team kicked off action Monday at the 6,162- yard, par 71 Grand Canyon University Golf Course with a 310 (+26) to claim fourth place round one. Gabrielle Gibson leads the Cowgirls and is atop the leaderboard with a first-round score of 74 (+3).

“It’s nice to have a solid start even with a few early season mistakes,” Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender said. “As a team and individually, the girls have done a great job sticking to our process. I look forward to building off of a good start the next few days.”

Gibson closed strong Monday, as the sophomore registered two birdies on the back nine. She led UW and totaled three birdies during the first round of play.

Megan Knadler is tied sixth after the opening round of play. She totaled a score of 76 (+5), while Kathleen Kershisnik is tied 16th with a day-one mark of 78 (+7). Playing as an individual, Kaylee Knadler recorded a 78 (+7) as well.

Emily Woodard, Mackenzie Barrie and Klara Castillo each kicked off their tournament with an 82 (+11). Barrie and Castillo are playing as individuals for Wyoming. Taylor Dorans is two shots behind sitting tied 64th with a first-round total of 84 (+13), and to round out the Cowgirls, Amanda Hinchey shot an 83 (+12) on the first day.

“The course is newly renovated so there were some inconsistencies with the conditions,” Stender added. “It is nothing we can’t work with and hope we will adapt tomorrow.”

The second round will begin tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. MT.
