Sophomore Mackenzie Barrie finished the opening round of the Grand Canyon Invitational with a career-best 72 (E) on Monday for the University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team. UW had a strong first day tallying a 306 (+18) on the Heritage Golf Course-Red Course in Litchfield Park, Ariz. Wyoming sits in sixth-place in the 21-team field.
"We got off to a rough start and I was proud of them in the grind they had to come back," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "It was good to see a lot of the things we have been working on come together."
Barrie's tally of 72 (E) was the lowest round by a Cowgirl this season and the lowest by a UW player since Emily Wood and Stacey Blunt shot 72 (E) at the Price's Give `Em Five Intercollegiate last season. Barrie is tied for second place in the 120-golfer field after 18-holes. Fellow sophomore Taylor Dorans also put together a solid first round tying a career-best at 74 (+2), as she is tied for eighth place.
"Mackenzie was very steady and patient and she has gotten so much better at scoring even if things aren't fully there." Stender said. "I was also pleased with Taylor performance today and she has put herself in a great position."
Redshirt freshman Gabrielle Gibson is tied for 50th after a 79 (+7). Senior Samantha Stancato added an 81 (+9) to finished the first round tied for 72nd. Junior Kathleen Kershisnik rounded out the Cowgirls scorers at 82 (+10), as she is tied for 80th.
Junior Emily Woodard, who is playing as an individual is tied for 17th with season-best round of 76 (+4). Freshmen Klara Castillo and Sarah Hankins are also playing as individuals. Castillo turned in an 83 (+11) with Hankins carding an 85 (+13).
"Emily played well and she is comfortable and confident," Stender said. "This is a good tournament on a great course where you have to be competent in your game." UC Riverside owns the team lead after the first day at 295 (+7). Barrie trails Deanna Salvatori of Grand Canyon after the first 18-holes after she fired a 70 (-2).
The Cowgirls will continue action tomorrow morning with 18-holes.
