KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -
Senior Stacey Blunt led the Cowgirl golfers with a 77 (+5) on the opening day of the Kiawah Island Classic hosted by the College of Charleston on Sunday. In what is Wyoming's first tournament of the spring, the Cowgirls are tied for 17th in the 36-team field at 312 (+24). The largest collegiate golf tournament in the country hosts six top-100 teams in the recent GolfWeek collegiate rankings.
"We played on the harder of the two courses today and some of the mistakes we made were trying to execute tough shots this early in the season," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "I was very pleased at where we were on our patient and confidence."
Blunt's 77 (+5) in the opening round placed the Federal Way, Wash., native in a tie for 62nd place in the 192 player field. She opened the afternoon with a 40 (+4) in the first nine holes and wrapped up the round with a 37 (+1) in the final nine holes.
"She has worked really hard and her confidence is where it needs to be as a leader on this team," Stender stated.
Freshman Taylor Dorans and senior Emily Wood are tied for 76th with a first round total of 78 (+6). Junior Samantha Stancato finished at 79 (+7) tying for 90th place. Sophomore Kathleen Kershisnik rounded out the UW lineup with a tally of 84 (+12) tying for 139th place.
Troy is the leader after the first round turning in a 291 (+3). Jacksonville State, No. 37 Kent State and St. John's are tied for second with tallies of 292 (+4). North Florida rounds out the top five at 295 (+7). Kent State's Wad Phaewchiplee, St. John's Ann Kim and Troy's Taylor McGraw are tied for the individual lead after round one at 69 (-3).
The Cowgirls tee off tomorrow morning at 7:41 a.m. MT. UW will play on the Oak Point course after playing on the Cougar Point course on Sunday at the Kiawah Island Golf resort.
