LARAMIE, Wyo. -
After nearly four full months without tournament action the University of Wyoming women's golf team began the spring portion of their 2004-05 season on Monday in Goodyear, Ariz., at the Bobcat Desert Classic. The three-day, 54-hole tournament features 19 teams from mainly the western half of the country. Wyoming's 18-hole total of 324 places them 16th after the first day.
UW freshman Laura Mengelkamp picked up right where she left off this past fall by posting the low Cowgirl round of 78, which ties her for 38th of 103 golfers. One stroke behind Mengelkamp was sophomore Michelle Camaione, whose 79 has her tied for 42nd.
Grand Canyon's Jody Chandonnet had the low score of the tournament after the first round with a 71, while Idaho leads the team standings with 294 strokes.
Each team played five golfers and counted the four best scores.
The tournament, which continues with 18 holes on both Tuesday and Wednesday, is hosted by Montana State University and is being played at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear. Palm Valley plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,050 yards.
