Wyoming Cowgirl Golf Continues Play at the Bobcat Desert Classic

March 7, 2006

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -

Through two rounds of play at the Bobcat Desert Classic in Goodyear, Ariz., the University of Wyoming Cowgirl golfers are in 15th place in the team standings.

Continuing to lower their team score with every round played this spring, UW shot a score of 330 (+42) on Tuesday after an opening day round of 335 (+47).

Cowgirl sophomore Laura Mengelkamp remained in contention for an individual title despite shooting 79 (+7), a mark five shots higher than her previous day's round. Still, Mengelkamp is only three strokes back of the leader and sits seventh in the field of 89 collegiate golfers.

"Our team score has dropped with every round we've played this spring and I'm pleased with that, but I can't stress enough how these girls need to take their practice habits out onto the course with them during a tournament," said Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender. "We'll keep getting better as we work on the mental part of golf, keeping focus during rounds and taking it one shot at a time."

Sacramento State slipped 14 strokes from their first-day total with a round of 315 (+27), but held on to first place by seven shots in the field of 16 participating schools. North Texas is in second place at 623, while Oral Roberts, Northern Colorado and Montana are all tied for third at 624.

Grand Canyon's Jessica McKay shot a tournament record two-under par 70 and is tied for second place with two other golfers. Andra Lancaster of North Texas holds the individual lead with a two-day total of 150 (+6), only one stroke ahead of the second place threesome. Christy Carter of Oral Roberts and Heather Dorris of Western New Mexico are tied for fifth at 152, followed by Mengelkamp in seventh.

The Cowgirls received identical rounds of 84 (+12) from freshman Mikala Henzlik, sophomore Lindsay Bauknecht and junior Whitney Hernandez on Tuesday.

Despite being disqualified from Monday's round for an incomplete scorecard, Wyoming junior Michelle Camaione was allowed to play today and her mark of 83 (+11) did count towards the Cowgirl team score.

One final round of 18 holes will be played on Wednesday.

The three-round Bobcat Desert Classic, hosted by Montana State, is being played at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear. Palm Valley plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,215 yards.
