Senior Molly Black shot an even-par 72 to help the University of Wyoming women's golf team record a solid first day in steady wind at the UNLV Spring Invitational on Monday at the Boulder Creek Golf Club. The Cowgirls currently sit 11th as a team with an opening round total of 302 (+14), but trail No. 44 Tulsa by two strokes and are just six strokes back of No. 42 UNLV for fourth place.

"Molly is a very good ball striker and did a great job of staying steady throughout the day," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "The girls had a terrific practice round yesterday and were able to transition that thought process of playing light to today."

Black's season-best round tied her for 14th and put her in elite company on the leaderboard, as she leads No. 96 Jade Bollinger of BYU by one stroke and trails No. 15 Danielle King of Pepperdine and No. 25 Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho by one. Black posted the low round of the day for UW, but it was a team effort for the Cowgirls on Monday.

Sophomore Dana Zamprelli shot a 75 (+3) to sit tied for 32nd after the first round, while fellow sophomore Taylor Smalley hit a 77 (+5) to tie for 43rd. Junior Juanita Rico and redshirt junior Jenna Zamprelli rounded out UW's scorers with a 78 (+6) and 83 (+11) respectively. The group's first-round total of 302 is a full eight strokes better than what the Cowgirls shot in the opening round of the same tournament last year.

"The girls played solid today, but we have two more days out there," Jensen said. "It's important for us to play 36 more holes of loose golf. We are going to make some mistakes, but we are going to do some good things as well."

Tomorrow's second round tees off at 7:30 a.m. Fans can follow live results at Golfstat.com.
