March 9, 2005

The University of Wyoming women's golf team closed out their first tournament of the spring on Wednesday in Goodyear, Ariz., at the Bobcat Desert Classic. Wyoming's team score of 320 from the third round gave them a 54-hole total of 965 which placed UW 17th of 19 teams.

Sophomore Michelle Camaione highlighted the day for the Cowgirls by shooting her season-best round of 75 (+3). That mark gave Camaione a tournament total of 232 (+16) and placed her in a tie for 28th of 103 golfers, also her best tournament finish of the season. Freshman Laura Mengelkamp had the next best Wyoming finish, tying for 47th after a final round of 80 (+8).

"We improved each day and I saw some good things from the girls this week," said UW head coach Jill Rettinger. "However, we do have some things we need to work on. This was the start of a three-week stretch where we'll play a lot of competitive rounds, which should benefit us."

Idaho's Renee Skidmore shot a final round of 70 (-2) to win the individual title by five strokes over Boise State's Katie Street. Idaho also was tops in the team standings with 888 strokes.

The three-day tournament was hosted by Montana State University and played at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear. Palm Valley plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,050 yards.

Wyoming will head right back on the road for their next tournament, the Islanders Spring Classic. The event will be held next week in Corpus Christi, Texas, March 14-15.
