For the first time in five years, a University of Wyoming Cowgirl golfer finished atop the leader board and earned an individual title on Tuesday. UW freshman Laura Mengelkamp maintained her lead from the first 36 holes and posted a 78 (+6) during the third and final round at the Islander Spring Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Her round three score gave Mengelkamp a 54-hole total of 227 (+11), good enough for first place of 47 golfers. The UW freshman notched scores of 73 (+1) and 76 (+4) during the first day of competition. Lauren Cheves of North Texas and Lisa Westman of McNeese State tied for second place, six strokes behind Mengelkamp.

Wyoming's 54-hole team score of 964 earned them a third place tie with Arkansas-Little Rock in the nine team field. UW tallied a third round of 321 which solidified their finish behind team champion North Texas (947) and McNeese State (957).

"We are thrilled with Laura's individual title," said UW head coach Jill Rettinger. "She has been working hard for this finish all season and it's great to see a Wyoming Cowgirl win a tournament.

"The girls played with a lot of heart Tuesday. We struggled with some nerves at the end and probably let some holes slip away, but I can't fault them for the way they played because they played very hard."

Sophomore Kayla Morrison's final round of 82 (+10) was good enough for a Top-10 finish, ninth place with a tournament total of 240. Freshman Lindsay Bauknecht equaled Mengelkamp's score of 78 (+6) in the final 18 holes and finished 12th.

The last individual tournament wins by Cowgirl golfers came during the 1999-2000 season. That year, senior Jordan Lintz won the inaugural Mountain West Conference Championships and junior Jessi Santesson took first at the Boise State Bronco Invitational.

Next up for the Wyoming women's golf team is the Oregon Duck Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday, March 21-22, in Junction City, Ore., at the Shadow Hills Country Club.
