VALLEJO, Calif. -
The University of Wyoming women's golf team finished action at the Hiddenbrooke Intercollegiate in Vallejo, Calif. on Monday, after a late second round that was finished before the third round.
The Cowgirls finished the second round with a tournament best 324 (+36) after darkness cut the second day short.
"We played really tough on the second-day and really put ourselves in a situation for the championship, which is everything you ask for as a coach," said head coach Josey Stender. "Jonelle and Molly played really well this weekend and it is nice to see them gain some confidence."
In the final day, sophomore Molly Black had the team's best round with her 76 (+4), which finished her in a tie for 13th-place. She followed junior Jonelle Martinez with her season-best finish in a tie for sixth. She had two 80 (+8) rounds and finished the tournament with a 78 (+6).
Junior Sarah Fogerty followed Martinez and Black with her three round total of 250 (+34) and a tie for 28th place. Freshman Juanita Rico and sophomore Jenna Zamprelli rounded out the field for the Cowgirls in a tie for 49th place and 61st place respectfully.
The Cowgirls as a team were only nine strokes behind the fourth place host Drake University and 29 strokes behind the champion Central Arkansas.
"Unfortunately it was right there for us and we just couldn't take advantage of the opportunity," said Stender.
Up next for the Cowgirls will be the Dixie Classic hosted by Brigham Young University in St. George, Utah, March 24-25.
