Led by four Cowgirls that improved their score, the University of Wyoming women's golf team posted the eighth-best total in the second round of the BYU Entrada Classic to finish the first day in 12th place as a team. UW battled cold and rainy conditions at the Snow Canyon Country Club for a 334 (+46) in the first round, but carded a 313 (+25) in the second to sit at 647 (+71) just 10 strokes behind No. 44 BYU.

"In the early conditions we had a hard time getting comfortable and confident with our swing, so we were playing really tentative," UW head women's coach Josey Stender said. "It's such a difficult course that you can't afford to have doubt when you get over the ball."

The Cowgirls' demeanor changed in the second round, though, according to Stender. Senior Molly Black posted the low round for UW at 77 (+5) and junior Juanita Rico notched a 78 (+6), but sophomores Dana Zamprelli and Taylor Smalley had the most dramatic improvements. Zamprelli improved her second-round score by 13 strokes with a 79 (+7), while Smalley also shot a 79 (+7) to improve by 11 strokes. Freshman Emily Wood is playing as an individual so her score does not count toward UW's team score, but she cut eight strokes off her second round with an 80 (+8).

"In the second round I told them we have to change our thought process," Stender said. "Let's be aggressive and go for it and play with some confidence. Almost everyone lowered their scores, so I'm really proud of them for persevering as a team."

Wyoming, which is playing in its third event in as many weeks, wraps up competition at the BYU Entrada Classic with 18 holes tomorrow morning. Fans can follow live results by clicking on the link above.

"I believe that we can break 300 on this course," Stender said. "Every person can shoot under 75. What we have to do is play the difficult stretch of holes well like did today and take advantage of the easier holes."
