LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl golf team placed 10th out of 14 teams at the Xavier St. Croix Collegiate Classic on Sunday. The tournament was played in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, and was hosted by Xavier University.
Wyoming closed out the three-day event with a final round of 337 to finish with a final score of 988. SMU captured the team title by 13 strokes over Baylor -- 916 to 929.
Samantha Richdale of Illinois State came from four strokes back, entering Sunday's final round, to overtake Kristina Rothengatte of SMU for the individual title. Richdale fired a final round of 74, to end the tournament with a 10-over par total of 226 to Rothengatte's 11-over par 227. UW freshman Kayla Morrison was Wyoming's top finisher, tying for 34th place, with a 28-over par total of 244.
"Kayla (Morrison) finished strong with a round of 80, but as a team we struggled a little bit in the final round," said UW women's golf coach Jill Rettinger. "Overall though, I was pleased with our play throughout the tournament. Kayla and Shala (Hanson) each had a round in the 70s and a round of 80 this week -- that was very positive.
"I think this was good for us to play two tournaments in one week's time. It gave us a chance to really work on our games. Now we have about three weeks off before our next tournament, and will be able to fine tune our games prior to returning to competition."
The Xavier St. Croix Collegiate Classic was played at the Carambola Golf Club in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. The course measured 6,020 yards, and played to a par of 72.
The Cowgirls next tournament will be the Brigham Young Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah, on April 5-6.
