The University of Wyoming women's golf team played the final 18 holes of the Oregon Duck Invitational on Tuesday in Junction City, Ore. After playing three rounds in two days the Cowgirls finished 17th in the 17-team field. Wyoming posted a final total of 1,015 strokes (+151).
A bright spot for the Cowgirls was freshman Laura Mengelkamp who shot a final round of 79 (+7), moved up two spots from Day One and earned a Top-20 individual finish in a tournament that included three Top-25 teams and six Top-50 individuals. Mengelkamp finished with a total score of 233 (+17) which tied her for 20th place of 87 golfers. Her first day scores were an 80 (+8) and a 74 (+2).
California, 908 (+44), came from six strokes back to win the team title narrowly over Day One leader Oregon, 909 (+45). Two-time defending champion Washington State finished fourth. The Cougars' Kim Welch, who was making a run at winning the individual title at this tournament for the fourth consecutive year, finished second by one stroke to medalist Kay Hoey of Long Beach State, 218 (+2).
The 54-hole, two-day tournament was played at the Shadow Hills Country Club. Shadow Hills plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,103 yards.
