Junior Juanita Rico shot the fourth-best single round in Cowgirl golf history with a 70 (-2) to lead the University of Wyoming women to a 12th-place team finish after the third round of the BYU Entrada Classic on Tuesday at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Golf Course. UW improved its score each round, including a 309 (+21) on the final morning, to finish at 956 (+92), while Wisconsin won the 15-team tournament at 914 (+50).
"I was pleased that we improved our score each round for a good total score," UW head women's coach Josey Stender said. "Going into the tournament we wanted to be more consistent so it was nice to see that improvement."
After starting the day tied for 32nd at +15, Rico skyrocketed up the leaderboard with the second-best overall round of the day to tie for 10th in the final standings with a three-round total of 229 (+13). She began the round on the 11th hole and went birdie-bogey-birdie on 15, 16 and 17 to enter the turn one below par. She continued her solid play with three birdies and two bogeys on the front nine to play the entire round at or below par. Rico now owns two of the top four single-round marks in school history, after posting a 69 (-3) at the CU/Heather Farr Memorial during her freshman season.
"Juanita has been playing well this whole semester, but hasn't been able to get any puts to drop," Stender said. "Today they were finally falling for her. She played aggressive like we've talked about and put herself in good positions to get better looks at shots."
Senior Molly Black improved her position on the leaderboard during the final day as well to earn a tie for 22nd. She shot a 75 (+3) during the third round to finish with a total of 232 (+16). Black started the final morning on the 10th hole and birdied the first two holes, but climbed to as high as +5 on the front nine before shooting -1 on two of the last three holes. Sophomore Taylor Smalley had a solid day as well with an 80 (+8) to finish at 249 (+33) in a tie for 64th.
The Cowgirls continue their season at the MountainView Collegiate Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Tucson, Ariz., at the MountainView Golf Course.
"From what we've heard you can score well on this course, so that will be good for our confidence after several tournaments at challenging courses," Stender said. "We've been talking the whole semester about getting our confidence up and learning from each round and each day and taking that to the next course."
