Junior Juanita Rico continued her solid play with back-to-back rounds of even par at the MountainView Collegiate Invitational on Friday, as she guided the Wyoming women's golf team into a tie for 10th at 602 (+26) with Kansas State and Gonzaga in the 18-team field. The Cowgirls shot a 295 (+7) during the morning round on the MountainView Golf Course to tie for the sixth best round in program history, and crafted a 307 (+19) during the second.

"Obviously I was really pleased with this morning's round," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We knew we had the potential to shoot that low on this course. We didn't play 100 percent perfect, but it was clicking with everybody and we managed the course really well as a whole."

Rico's two rounds of 72 (E) ties her for seventh in the 92-player field after the first day, thanks to two birdies and two bogeys in the first round and three of each in the second round. She is tied with the No. 54 and 71 ranked players in the nation and ahead of five other ranked opponents.

"We knew it was just a matter of time before it came together for Juanita," Stender said. "She would say there were some shots out there that she felt could have gotten her lower, but she played very patient and was confident with her club selection."

Rico wasn't the only bright spot for UW during the day, as all five players shot below 79 in the first round before winds gusts picked up during the afternoon's second round. Sophomore Taylor Smalley fired a career-best 73 (+1) in the first and followed with a 77 (+5) to sit tied for 43rd at 150 (+6). Senior Molly Black also went one over in the opening round, before hitting 78 (+6) in the second for a tie for 45th at 151 (+7). Freshmen Stacey Blunt and Emily Wood opened with 79 (+7) and 77 (+5), respectively, but hit 80 (+8) and 82 (+10) in the afternoon round. Both are tied for 79th at 159 (+15).

"We kind of got off to a rough start in the second round because of some indecisiveness," Stender said. "The course did play more difficult in the afternoon, but I was pleased we hung in there."

Competition at the MountainView Collegiate concludes with 18 holes tomorrow morning. Fans can follow the action with live results through the link above.
