RANCHO SANTE FE, Calif. -
Junior Emily Wood hit an 80 (+8) to pace the University of Wyoming women's golf team to 15th in the team standings at 344 (+56) after Sunday's first round of the SDSU Farms Invitational. USC, the top-ranked program in the nation, paces the 15-team field at 298 (+10) on The Farms Golf Club.
"I am a little disappointed because even though this is a difficult course and a strong field, we are capable of so much more as a team," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We had some good moments during the round, but we are competing against teams that are very solid from top to bottom. This tournament is about us and what we can do on this golf course."
Wood is tied for 46th after the first round, while fellow junior Stacey Blunt is two strokes back at 82 (+10) in a tie for 55th. Freshman Kathleen Kershisnik is tied for 74th with an 87 (+15) in the first round, while senior Dana Zamprelli hit a 95 (+23) to sit 82nd. Sophomore Samantha Stancato withdrew from the first round.
"Emily, Stacey and Kathleen only had a few holes that hurt each of them," Stender said. "Otherwise they all played very consistent. Part of the challenge today was that the course played a lot different from our practice round, so we were indecisive in our decision making when there is very little room for error. This is a very resilient group, so I expect them to have nothing but fight in them during tomorrow's round."
Monday's second round tees off at 9 a.m. MT. Fans can follow live stats on GolfStat.com.
