The University of Wyoming women's golf team completed competition at the rain-shortened BYU Dixie Classic on Tuesday in St. George, Utah. Wyoming finished 14th of 14 teams with a two-round total of 697 strokes (+121).
No. 26 UNLV claimed their third straight BYU Dixie Classic title, extending a first round lead and posting a 14-stroke victory over 16th-ranked Arkansas. UNLV scored 617 (+41). Arkansas finished in second at 631 followed by host BYU and Portland State.
Cowgirl freshman Laura Mengelkamp had Wyoming's best finish with identical rounds of 83, scoring 166 (+22) which tied her for 40th of 77 golfers.
BYU's Rachel Newren took individual medalist honors by one stroke over UNLV's Seema Sadekar. Newren used a final 18 score of one-under par 71 to finish at 149 (+5). UNLV's Hwanhee Lee could not hold her Day One lead and finished third, two strokes back.
An afternoon rainstorm on Monday forced cancellation of the second round, shortening the tournament from 54 to 36 holes.
The 18th annual two-day tournament was played at Entrada at Snow Canyon. Entrada plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,151 yards.
Wyoming now has two weeks to prepare for the Mountain West Conference Tournament which will be played April 21-23 in Sunriver, Ore.
