The five scorers for the Wyoming women's golf team combined for seven rounds under 80, as UW finished the first day of the Cowgirl Classic tied for seventh with Boise State at +40 (616) on the beautiful Ocotillo Golf Resort. The host UW Cowgirls are 10 strokes out of fourth after carding 307 and 309, while Portland State leads the 23-team field at +5 (581).

"The first round we got off to a rough start with some breezy conditions and nerves, but we fought hard and made up some good ground in the second nine," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "During the second round I think a little bit of mental fatigue set in. We lost four shots on the last hole by three players which was a tough way to end a decent round."

Junior Juanita Rico led the charge for Wyoming with rounds of 76 (+4) and 75 (+3) to end the first day tied for 19th at +7 (151). Senior Molly Black and freshman Stacey Blunt are tied for 32nd at +11 (155). Black fired an 80 (+8) in the first round, but rebounded with a 75 (+3), while Blunt posted a 76 (+4) and 79 (+7). Sophomore Dana Zamprelli hit a 77 (+5) and 80 (+8) for a tie for 46th at +13 (157), while fellow sophomore Taylor Smalley rounded out UW's scorers with a 78 (+6) and 85 (+13) to sit at +19 (163). Redshirt junior Jenna Zamprelli and freshman Emily Wood, both competing as individuals, finished the first day at +19 (163) and +21 (165), respectively.

"Juanita is just a great scrambler and grinds during the round and doesn't get frazzled," Jensen said. "She was hitting the ball a lot better during the second round, but just didn't get some puts to drop during the first round."

Portland State leads the tournament after setting a single-round course record with a sizzling 287 in the second round. PSU posted a 294 in the first for a total of 581 (+5) to lead by 17 strokes. PSU's Britney Yada leads the individual standings at -3 (141) after shooting 70 (-2) and 71 (-1). New Mexico State's Suteera Chanachai shot a tournament-record 67 in the second round to finish the first day tied for second at -1 (143).
