The University of Wyoming women's golf battled blustery conditions on the opening day of the ninth annual Cowgirl Classic on the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz. on Monday. The Cowgirls sit in 18th place with a tally of 629 (+53) after the first 36 holes of play shooting a first round of 312 (+24) and a second round of 317 (+29). The event, which is held at Ak-chin Southern Dunes Golf Club for the second time in tournament's history features 22 teams and 117 golfers.
"We put ourselves in a little bit of a whole after the first round, but really fought back in tough conditions in the afternoon" UW head coach Josey Stender said. "Samantha played really consistent and confident golf all day."
The Cowgirls were led by senior Samantha Stancato, who finished with a 36-hole tally of 151 (+7) to sit tied for 19th. She fired rounds of 75 (+3) and 76 (+4). Sophomore Mackenzie Barrie followed, as she notched rounds of 79 (+7) and 78 (+6), as she is tied for 63rd place with a total of 157 (+13). Junior Emily Woodard is tied for 71st with a mark of 158 (+14) with rounds of 79 (+7). Junior Kathleen Kershisnik is tied for 105th to round out the Cowgirl scorers with a two-round tally of 167 (+23).
Sophomore Taylor Dorans fired a 79 (+7) in the first round, but was disqualified after the second round and is knocked out of individual contention, as she can still be a part of the team score tomorrow. Freshman Sarah Hankins and redshirt freshman Gabrielle Gibson are tied for 98th place playing as individuals with a score of 164 (+20).Freshman Klara Castillo has a two-round mark of 167 (+23), as she is tied for 105th.
"Due to an unfortunate scorecard error we will have a little ground to make up, but confident we can recover and play a solid final round."
Mountain West foe Nevada leads the field with a two-round tally of 594 (+18). Washington State follows in second at 599 (+23) with San Francisco in third with a mark of 600 (+24). San Francisco's Emelie Lundstrom leads the field with a two-round score of 144 (E). She shot a 71 (-1) for the second round to jump 11 spots for the leader position going into the final round.
The Cowgirl Classic wraps up tomorrow morning with one 18-hole round set to tee off at 8:45 a.m. MT.
