Barrie and Gibson Finish Strong at Cowgirl Classic

The University of Wyoming women's golf team fired a 310 (+22) in Tuesday's final round to finish 20th at the ninth annual Cowgirl Classic on the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz. The 22 team field featured 117 golfers, as it was host in Maricopa for the second time in the tournament's history.

"We want to thank the entire staff at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes and Troon Golf for their amazing hospitality and continued support of our program," head coach Josey Stender said. "I think we came in with high expectations and let our nerves get the best of us, but we have 10 days till we leave for conference and we will address some areas and get ready to compete."

Senior Samantha Stancato led the Cowgirls finishing tied for 25th at 226 (+10). She finished the final round with a tally of 75 (+3). Sophomore Mackenzie Barrie tied for 45th with a mark of 230 (+14). She turned in a solid scorecard of 73 (+1) for the final round. Junior Emily Woodard finished the final round at 84 (+12) to finish the tournament at 242 (+26) tying for 94th place.

Junior Kathleen Kershisnik finished the final round at 83 (+11) to finish tied for 108th. Sophomore Taylor Dorans finished in 117th due to being disqualified for the second round. In rounds one and three, she fired a 79 (+7).

Redshirt freshman Gabrielle Gibson led the Wyoming individuals after a 72 (E) for the final round. She ended play at 236 (+20), as she tied for 71st place. Freshman Klara Castillo finished tied for 94th at 242 (+26) after a final round of 75 (+3). Fellow freshman Sarah Hankins also tied for 94th at 242 (+26) after a 78 (+6) on Tuesday.

"Mackenzie played confident and more relaxed today and it was great to see the younger players step up and perform at a high level," Stender said.

Mountain West rival Nevada walked away with the team title at 888 (+24). Washington State finished second with Lamar moving up one spot to finish third. Boise State's Genevieve Ling won individual medalist honors with a 216 (E) after firing a 71 (-1) for the final round.

The Cowgirls head to Mountain West Championship at the end of the month in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
