CHANDLER, Ariz. -
The third annual University of Wyoming Cowgirl Classic came to a conclusion Tuesday, April 7, in Chandler, Ariz., at the Ocotillo Golf Resort with the Cowgirls finishing in sixth out of 20 teams.
The Cowgirls improved one spot from the first two rounds to finish the three-round tournament with a total of 937 (+73) in sixth, behind the leading Northern Arizona Lady Lumberjacks with a team 908 (+44). NAU took the title for the second time in three years at the Cowgirl Classic.
The individual title went to Kelly Gillum from Montana State who won the scorecard playoff against Bethany Leclair of NAU with their matching 222's (+6).
The Cowgirls were led by junior Sarah Fogerty who finished in a tie for 11th place with her two-day total of 231 (+15). Fogerty was followed by freshman Juanita Rico with her tie for 17th place and total 233 (+17) strokes. With Rico's 74 today, she tied her best for the spring season.
"It was good to see Juanita get her consistency back and her ball striking was much improved today," said head coach Josey Stender.
Senior Mikala Henzlik and sophomore Johnna Jeffries played as individuals for the Cowgirls and added strong rounds. Jeffries improved each and every round and finished the third round with an 84, four strokes better than her opening round.
"We played much better today from the get-go and had more focus and confidence on the course," said Stender. "I hope we learned a lesson in that if we play like we can from the start we can compete against the best. It was nice to see us finish strong as we gear up for the Mountain West Conference Championships in two weeks."
Next up for the Cowgirl golf team will be the 2009 MWC Championships in Seaside, Calif. The MWC Championships will be held at Black Horse Bayonet from April 16-18.
