CHANDLER, Ariz. -
In the second annual Cowgirl Classic, the University of Wyoming women's golf team matched their highest finish of the season and placed second on Tuesday at the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz. The Cowgirls finished the three round tournament with a score of 915 (+51) and were only three strokes away from first place in the 16-team field.
Eastern Washington won the classic with a three-round total of 912 (+48). Nevada finished behind the Cowgirls and placed third (927), Northern Arizona was fourth (938) and Arkansas State was fifth (940).
Two Cowgirls finished in the top-five of the 92 person field and five Cowgirls finished in the top-25. Sophomore Sarah Fogerty led the Cowgirls and placed fourth with a three-round score of 224 (+8). Senior Laura Mengelkamp finished in a tie for fifth place after firing a 227 (+11) in the tournament. Sophomore Jonelle Martinez placed 15th (232, +16), senior Kaelee Aegerter tied for 18th (234, +18) and senior Lindsay Bauknecht tied for 25th (236, +20). Aegerter's finish is the first top-25 of her career.
Eastern Washington's Kristina Gargaro and South Dakota State's Hillary Gerster each finished with the top scorecard in the field at 221 (+5). Gargaro claimed the tournament title in a scorecard playoff.
"I couldn't be happier with how the tournament went, both logistically and with how well our team played," said Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender. "The girls have worked so hard this season and they deserve the success they have had. We all feel good about where we are heading into the Mountain West Conference Championships."
The Cowgirls will now have two weeks to prepare for the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championships. The championship meet will be held in Albuquerque, N.M. from April 17 through April 19.
