The University of Wyoming women's golf team carded a 300 (+12) during Friday's second round to remain within striking distance at the Mountain West Conference Championship in warm conditions on the Wigwam Golf Course. The Cowgirls second-best round of the spring put their two-day total at 605 (+29) and kept them within eight strokes of No. 43 San Diego State and Colorado State, who are tied at 597 (+21). No. 48 UNLV continues to lead at 578 (+2) after a 292 (+4) in the second round.

"Even though we only had a five-shot improvement in the second round, I feel a lot better about today's performance," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "I saw a lot of different types of persevering out there today from our team. From Jenna and Dana improving tremendously on their scores to Molly and Juanita doing what they always do. We are holding our own playing against some highly-ranked teams."

Sophomore Dana Zamprelli shot the low round of the day for Wyoming, as she improved her score from the first round by eight strokes with a 73 (+1) to sit tied for 28th at 154 (+10), while redshirt junior Jenna Zamprelli dropped seven strokes with a 76 (+4) to move into a tied for 33rd at 159 (+15). Junior Juanita Rico continued her steady play with another 74 (+2) for a two-round total of 148 (+4) and is the top Cowgirl on the leaderboard in a tie for 12th. Senior Molly Black carded a 77 (+5) in the second round to sit tied for 25th with a two-day total of 153 (+9) and freshman Stacey Blunt is 31st at 155 (+11) after an 81 (+9) in the second round.

"Dana definitely had more confidence and trust in her alignment today," Stender said. "She hit some ridiculously long drives which was a huge advantage for her. Jenna played within her capabilities and managed the course much better today. She put herself in position to score today. Molly really fought hard for her score again today. She wasn't 100 percent on any part, but hung in there."

The tournament concludes with a final round at 8 a.m. MT tomorrow, as the Cowgirls will be paired with Colorado State.

"This is a tough conference from top to bottom and we've been competitive here with a young team," Stender said. "Our goal all semester has been to put together three solid rounds and it will be huge for our team if we can finish strong tomorrow and take that into next year."
