Cowgirls Move Past BYU at MWC Championships

SEASIDE, Calif., (April 16, 2010) - After the second day at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Seaside, Calif., the University of Wyoming women's golf team moved up one spot and now sit in sixth place.

The Cowgirls shot a team 308 (+20), 13 strokes better than day one to move past the BYU Cougars after the second round while the New Mexico Lobos still lead with their second round 303 and two round total of 597 (+21).

"We played much better today and I am proud of the way that we responded as a team after our first round," said director of golf Joe Jensen. "Today's round showed a glimpse of the way that these girls can play and we will leave everything out of the course tomorrow."

Senior Jonelle Martinez had her best round of the season with her two over 74, making three birdies and five bogeys. She leads the Cowgirls with a two round total of 154 (+10) putting her in a tie for ninth place.

Sophomore Juanita Rico is second with a two round total of 156 (+12) where she finds herself in a tie for 18th place. Freshmen Taylor Smalley and Dana Zamprelli had matching 79's (+7) in the second round at the Black Horse Golf Course. Smalley moved into a tie for 26th place after her second round.

"Jonelle had a very good round today and we will need more of that if we want to move past San Diego State tomorrow," said Jensen. "We are only four strokes out of fifth place and it is a obstacle that we can overcome."

The Cowgirls will compete in the final round of the 2009-10 season on Saturday where results can followed at www.golfstat.com.
