The University of Wyoming women's golf team shot a 305 (+12) during Saturday's final round of the Mountain West Conference Championship to finish seventh in the team standings at the Wigwam Golf Course and tie the Cowgirls best tournament score of the season at 910 (+46). The three-day total is also UW's best at the conference championship since head coach Josey Stender took over the program in 2006.

"I take away from this tournament that our team has such a bright future," Stender said. "I'm very proud of the program and what we've accomplished this season, but also very encouraged knowing what we have ahead of us."

Senior Molly Black ended her Wyoming career on Saturday with a 75 (+3) to pace the Cowgirls during the third round. She started the day with a bogey on the first hole and double bogey on the third, but bounced back with two-straight birdies and finished the front nine at plus three. She hit two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine to shoot even for the final nine holes, as her three-day total of 228 (+12) placed her 26th in the individual standings.

"Molly went out like a champ in her final round and really fought hard for that score today," Stender said. "To have witnessed her growth as a player and as a person during her career has been very rewarding. She's done everything I've asked her to do. Her round today was a good example of her career at UW. It wasn't an easy round, but she worked her tail off and made her success."

Junior Juanita Rico finished as the top Cowgirl on the leaderboard with a 226 (+10) to tie for 24th, but carded a 78 (+6) in the third round after two-straight 74's (+2) and entering the day tied for 12th. UW's most consistent golfer during the majority of the season, Rico bogeyed five of the first seven holes on Saturday, before finding her groove on the back nine.

"It was a tough day for Juanita because she got off to a rough start and just couldn't get out of that hole," Stender said. "She's had a great season, though, and has definitely blossomed into a leader on the golf course for us. She's become much more vocal and her positive outlook is very contagious."

Sophomore Dana Zamprelli and redshirt junior Jenna Zamprelli both fired 76 (+4) in the final round, while freshman Stacey Blunt shot 80 (+8). Dana totaled 230 (+14) to tie for 28th, while Jenna and Blunt tied for 32nd at 235 (+19). The Zamprelli sisters shot identical rounds of plus three on the front nine and plus one on the back nine.

"I feel like Dana and Jenna probably played their best golf of the season during the tournament's last two rounds," Stender said. "It was great for Stacey to be here as a freshman as well and gain valuable experience."

No. 34 TCU won the MWC tournament with a final-round 284 (-4) for 865 (+1) to overtake No. 48 UNLV, who shot a 292 (+4) on the last day to finish at 870 (+6). UNLV's Therese Koelbaek, ranked 11th in the nation, won the MWC individual title with a 209 (-7) after shooting 68 (-4) in the third round.

The Horned Frogs earned the conference's at-large bid to the NCAA regional tournament and will likely be joined by MWC brethren UNLV, BYU, New Mexico and No. 43 San Diego State. Of the more than 300 women's golf programs in the nation, only 64 qualify for the postseason.

"There's no doubt we play in one of the strongest conferences in the country, for as few teams as we have and as many going to the postseason," Stender said. "We held our own at this tournament, but just weren't 100 percent up to where our potential is."
