Phoenix, Ariz. -
After playing in the top two on the leaderboard the majority of the day, the University of Wyoming women's golf team faltered down the stretch of the Mountain West Championship's first round to finish Friday seventh in the team standings at 317 (+29). The Cowgirls shot a combined plus nine on hole 18 at the Wigwam Resort, but still sit within 13 strokes of the six other squads.
"We really played much better today than our score would indicate," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "It's tough when you lose that many strokes on one hole, but that was our day. We had poor placement off the tee at 18 and put ourselves in a tough position on that hole."
Senior Juanita Rico paced the Cowgirls with a 77 (+5) during a first round that included two birdies. She was even through the front nine, but ended with bogeys on three of the final four holes to sit tied for 12th in the standings. Likewise, junior Dana Zamprelli was plus one through nine, before bogeying three of the final four holes to finish tied for 15th at 78 (+6). Freshman Samantha Stancato carded an 80 (+8) to end the day tied for 20th, while sophomores Stacey Blunt and Emily Wood shot 82 (+10) and 83 (+11), respectively, for the round. Blunt is tied for 25th and Wood is tied for 30th.
"We didn't do anything outstanding today, but we also didn't do anything overly poor," Stender said. "The back nine is just more difficult. The scoring chances are on the front nine and you just have to maintain on the back nine for a good score. The teams that did that today are leading."
No. 35 TCU leads the tightly-bunched field at 304 (+16), while No. 45 San Diego State is three strokes back and No. 48 New Mexico rounds out the top three at 310 (+22). New Mexico's Manon De Roey, Colorado State's Christina Spinzig and San Diego State's Christine Wong are tied for the individual lead at 72 (E).
Tomorrow's second round begins at 8 a.m. MT, as the Cowgirls are paired with Boise State. Fans can follow live results on Golfstat.com through the link above.
"Tomorrow we need to have the same mindset and come out with the same game plan with a couple modifications based on how the course played today," Stender said. "We need to still have the confidence that we had today and not let one hole shake where we are mentally."
