RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -
The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team opened play at the Mountain West Championship on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. on Monday. Senior Samantha Stancato paced UW with an 18-hole tally of 75 (+3). The Cowgirls are tied for eighth place in the nine team field after the first round with a team score of 312 (+24).
“We got off to a little bit of nervous start and really recovered well as the round went on,” UW head coach Josey Stender said. “It is a championship golf course that plays very tough, but tomorrow we can come out more relaxed and have a better feel on the greens.”
Stancato’s 75 (+3) placed her tied for 14th place in the 45-golfer field after the first round. She was one under par and tied for third place after nine holes of play. Her score was a career-best round for her in a MW Championship. Sophomore Taylor Dorans is tied for 24th with a score of 77 (+5).
“Samantha and Taylor played very confident and very consistent all day,” Stender said. “Samantha really created opportunities being aggressive, yet very smart in her shot selection.”
Junior Emily Woodard is tied for 34th after turning in a scorecard of 79 (+7). Redshirt freshman Gabrielle Gibson followed with a mark of 81 (+9), as she is tied for 38th. Sophomore Mackenzie Barrie finished the opening day at 83 (+11), as she is tied for 42nd.
San Diego State is in the team lead finishing the day with an even par score of 288. San Jose State is in second place at 293 (+5) with UNLV and Nevada tied for third with a tally of 299 (+11). The Aztec’s Milagros Chaves shot a 66 (-6) to lead the field. Her round tied for the lowest round by an individual in championship history.
The Cowgirls return to the course tomorrow morning for one 18-hole round.
