Wyoming Looks to Move up After First Day of MWC Women's Golf Championship

April 22, 2002

At the conclusion of the first day of competition at the 2002 Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championship, two-time defending champion New Mexico holds a three-stroke lead over second place San Diego State -- 293 to 296. The Wyoming Cowgirls are in sixth place in the six-team field with a 325.

The Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore., is the site of 2002 MWC Championship. New Mexico tied a first-round record with an opening round 293, matching the record the Lobos set a year ago at the Sunriver Resort. Kristi Larsen of New Mexico is the individual leader, shooting a three-under par round of 68 on Monday to lead by three strokes over Shayna Miyajima of San Diego State. Wyoming's low score of the day went to seniors Katherine Crowley and Tara Ludwig, who both opened with nine-over par rounds of 80. Crowley and Ludwig are tied for 22nd in the field of 30 golfers.

"New Mexico came into the tournament as the favorite, and they played exceptionally well today," said UW women's golf coach Jill Rettinger. "The individual race has a lot of golfers grouped in the middle. Both Katherine (Crowley) and Tara (Ludwig) are within five shots of the Top 10, heading into tomorrow's second round. We have a lot of time, with two rounds remaining. We just have to try and eliminate the bad holes."

This year's field includes six Mountain West Conference schools. There is one new team competing for the first time in the MWC Women's Golf Championship as UNLV added women's golf this season. The six MWC institutions which sponsor women's golf programs are: Wyoming, Brigham Young, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico and San Diego State.

First-day parings saw BYU, San Diego State and Wyoming in Group 1 and New Mexico, Colorado State and UNLV in Group 2.

The defending champion Lobos dominated the tournament last season, winning by 26 strokes over Colorado State and San Diego State, which both tied for second.

Heading into this year's championship, New Mexico was ranked No. 22 in the Golfweek Division I women's golf rankings. The next MWC team in the national rankings was BYU at No. 58

The tournament format is three 18-hole rounds. The second round is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. Pacific time on Tuesday (10 a.m. Mountain time), and the final round will tee off Wednesday at 8 a.m. Pacific time (9 a.m. Mountain).

The Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort measures 6,089 yards and plays to a par of 71.
