Wyoming in Sixth Place at the 2002 MWC Golf Championship

April 23, 2002

It appears to be a three-team race at the 2002 Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championship. Heading into Wednesday's final round, San Diego State holds a three-stroke lead over Colorado State and a four-stroke lead over two-time defending champion New Mexico.

The Aztecs trailed the Lobos by three strokes after the opening round on Monday. But with a second round 298 on Tuesday, SDSU moved four strokes ahead of UNM. Colorado State also jumped ahead of the Lobos with the low round of the day on Tuesday -- a 296. After shooting a remarkable opening round of 293, New Mexico shot a 305 in round two. SDSU carries a two-round total of 594 into Wednesday's final round. CSU is at 597, and New Mexico is at 598. The other three teams in the tournament all retained their same positions in the standings on Tuesday -- UNLV remained in fourth at 608, BYU is in fifth at 612 and Wyoming is sixth at 648.

Lynette Duran of Colorado State jumped into the lead for the individual title. Duran was the only golfer to shoot a subpar round on Tuesday. She fired a one-under par 70 and sits at even par 142 for the tournament. Duran holds a two-stroke lead over Shayna Miyajima of San Diego State, who has posted a 144 total.

Two Wyoming golfers shot rounds in the 70s on Tuesday. Senior Tara Ludwig shot a 79 to improve her two-day total to 159, good for 24th position. Junior Kim Nissen shot a 78 on Tuesday, and is in 26th place with a 161 total. Ludwig is in a group of 13 golfers that are within six strokes of one another from 153 to 159. That is nearly half of the field of 30 competitors.

The defending champion Lobos dominated the tournament last season, winning by 26 strokes over Colorado State and San Diego State, which both tied for second. New Mexico also won the tournament in the spring of 2000, making them the only women's golf champion in the three-year history of the Mountain West Conference.

Heading into this year's championship, New Mexico was ranked No. 22 in the Golfweek Division I women's golf rankings. The next MWC team in the national rankings was BYU at No. 58

The tournament format is three 18-hole rounds. The third, and final round, will tee off Wednesday at 9 a.m. Pacific time (10 a.m. Mountain).

The Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort is the site of this year's championship. The course measures 6,089 yards and plays to a par of 71.
