For the second consecutive day,Wyoming sophomore Alison McGuire, from Cheyenne, Wyo., fired the best roundof her college career. In the second round of the Mountain West ConferenceWomen's Golf Championship on Tuesday, McGuire shot a 74. That is threeshots better than her previous personal best of 77, which she shot onMonday. She is tied for ninth place in the field of 25 competitors.
Entering this week, McGuire's previous low round as a collegian hadbeen a 79. She will enter Wednesday's third and final round tied withHeather Rollo of San Diego State for ninth place at 151. New Mexico leadsin the team competition with a team score of 578. Wyoming is in fifth placein the field of five MWC schools, with a team score of 629. Elise Kase ofNew Mexico is the individual leader with a two-round total of 139.
"Alison (McGuire) continued her outstanding play again today ," saidWyoming women's golf coach Jill Johnson. "You could see the determinationon her face today. She is really playing with a lot of confidence, and hashit so many good shots this week. Alison is still in the Top 10, and she'swithin four strokes of fifth place entering tomorrow's final round.
"As a team, we played much better today, lowering our score by fivestrokes from Monday. But all the other teams stepped up today, as well. Nodoubt, we would like to be higher in the standings, but on a positive note,the girls have made a lot of improvement from the beginning of the seasonuntil now."
The 2001 MWC Women's Golf Championship is being played on theMeadows Course at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The course measures5,851 yards and plays to a par of 71.
The tournament format is three 18-hole rounds, with one round eachto be played on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. All three rounds are set totee off at 10:00 a.m., Mountain time. The third and final round will beplayed on Wednesday, April 25.
