LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Following a snowstorm in Sunriver, Ore., on Wednesday night, the 2003 Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championship was moved to Ambrey Glen Golf Course in Bend, Ore., for its opening round on Thursday. The tournament teed off at 1:00 p.m. rather than 9 a.m. The Wyoming Cowgirls find themselves in sixth place in the six-team field after the first day's competition. UNLV is trying to be the first team other than New Mexico to capture a MWC Women's Golf Championship.
UNLV leads the tournament by four strokes heading into Friday's second round. UNLV shot an opening round 305 to lead Colorado State, which shot a 309. Wyoming shot an opening round 335. The New Mexico Lobos have won each of the first three Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championships. The Lobos find themselves 11 strokes back after the opening round, with a 316 score.
Sunny Oh of UNLV leads in the individual race, firing an opening round of one-over par 73. She leads Katrina Leckovic of New Mexico by one stroke. Wyoming's top scorer in Thursday's first round was sophomore Shala Hanson, who shot a seven-over par 79 to tie for 12th.
"We woke up with snow this morning, and ended up moving the tournament to Bend (Ore.) on a course we hadn't ever played before," said Wyoming women's golf coach Jill Rettinger. "I can't say enough about the way the girls adjusted to the conditions.
"Shala Hanson shot an outstanding round of 79. I was really proud of the way she played. We need to get more consistent play from top to bottom to move up in the standings, but we have two rounds remaining to see what we can do."
The Mountain West Conference Championship will continue with its second of three rounds on Friday, April 25 in Bend, Ore., at the Ambrey Glen Golf Course. The Mountain West Conference has six of its eight member schools that sponsor women's golf. The third and final 18-hole round will be played Saturday, April 26.
