RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -
Junior Emily Wood's 84 (+12) paced the University of Wyoming women's golf team during Thursday's opening round of the 2013 Mountain West Championship on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at the Mission Hill Country Club. The Cowgirls are eighth in the team standings at 343 (+55), while Fresno State paces the eight-team field at 306 (+18).
"It was tough and windy conditions on a challenging course today," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "I was pretty disappointed that the course beat us today. Two poor club selections really cost Emily [Wood] five shots, but otherwise she played solid. Samantha [Stancato] and Dana [Zamprelli] also played much better than their scores showed, but couldn't get a putt to fall. I'm confident we will play like we know we can tomorrow and learn from our course management mistakes today."
Wood's score puts her tied for 29th, while senior Dana Zamprelli is tied for 33rd after an 85 (+13) in the first round. Sophomore Samantha Stancato is one stroke back tied for 35th and freshman Kathleen Kershisnik is tied for 37th at 88 (+16). Junior Stacey Blunt hit a 90 (+18) to sit 39th.
The second round of the MW Championship will begin Friday at 8:30 a.m. MT. Fans can follow live results through Golfstat.com.
